Mental health
“I thought I wouldn’t complete this term, I lost my friend Sumaya, she died. I spent a full month when I could see her. The other friend of mine who used to encourage me left to join a different school, it was hard. I thought about staying home with my mother instead of being at school. But teacher Mary [project counselor] gave me encouragement. I was counseled about the effects of letting this issue take over my life. Now I can concentrate at school unlike last term when I would be in class and start crying. Now I can share my troubles, and this term I performed somehow better.”
Academics
when we look at the new curriculum which is competence-based for senior one and two, our DIY members are really very engaged and involved as what they do is in line with the new curriculum so it’s very easy for them to team up with others as they are used to working in groups.
Academics
when I first came, in first term…I used not to attend classes: …mathematics, biology, and chemistry, even physics I never used to attend them. So when they taught us that ‘stop that thing of having that this subject is not good for me why should I be in this subject why do I need mathematics, hating the subject because of the teacher’, it taught me that I can perform in every subject equally without failing. … it has helped me in very many things, even now I’m performing in the subjects I never liked more than the subjects I liked.

Social and communication skills
It teaches us how to manage conflicts, settle disputes among people and bring back that love, friendship and other things. Even teamwork still from DIY will help me to cooperate more with other friends and come up with better things: like grow together. You know two heads are better than one so we shall come up with the better things
Positive identity
As I shared with you, the children are confident, they can express themselves. They can easily come to the administration and say ‘excuse us for us senior twos we are facing this and this, and by the way, we have written our issues here, we are waiting for a response. We suggest that you plan and you give us time and we meet’. You real see that they are engaging you, they are challenging you to give them time. Which is very good, because sometimes they can just say let us wait and go away, but they can lobby for what they want.
